Sciatica Q & A

by Ted S. An, DC

Why Does Sciatica Develop?

Sciatica develops when the sciatic nerve is damaged in some way. The cause of this damage can include conditions such as compressed discs, spinal stenosis, and spondylolisthesis, along with many other potential causes. The chiropractor can make a sciatica diagnosis and will then determine the reason that the condition developed before initiating treatment.

How Can Patients Recognize Sciatica?

The most obvious symptom of sciatica is a sharp pain that travels down the leg. Most people experience sciatica in just one leg, although it can happen in both legs at the same time in rare cases. The pain usually starts in the lower back and quickly shoots down the leg. It may travel all the way to the heel, or it may only move part of the way down the leg. While less common, some sciatica sufferers also have numbness in the leg or pins and needles feeling in the foot.

What Can the Chiropractor Do for Sciatica?

Since sciatica starts in the spinal column, that is also where the treatment usually begins. Chiropractic alignment can correct many of the issues that cause sciatica, which will, in turn, lead to pain relief for the patient. The alignment will correct issues like a trapped sciatic nerve, moving it into the correct position again. Some patients who suffer from sciatica may also benefit from massage therapy or other therapy options like non-surgical spinal decompression. At An Chiropractic & Spine Center, Dr. An customizes sciatica treatment plans based on each patient’s symptoms and individual needs.
