Chiropractic Care Q & A

by Ted S. An, DC

What Is a Subluxation?

A subluxation is a vertebral alignment issue, typically a minor one. Essentially, a vertebra is not in the same proper state of alignment that the rest of the vertebrae are when a subluxation is present. The misaligned vertebra causes pressure or a stretching of the spinal area nerves. This, in turn, means that nerve signals can’t be transmitted in the right way and can lead to pain. Subluxations can happen for a variety of reasons, including auto accidents, trip, and fall accidents, improper lifting, and poor posture.

How Does the Chiropractor Correct a Subluxation?

The chiropractor can correct a subluxation through a hands-on adjustment. During this adjustment, the patient may hear a slight popping noise. This is the sound of the vertebra moving back into its proper position. Once the vertebra has been moved back into the right spot, pressure and pain are dramatically relieved in most cases. Patients may also be given a set of prescribed exercises. These exercises will help strengthen the core muscles that support the spinal column. As the body builds strength in this area, it becomes less susceptible to misalignments and to other types of injuries.

What Is the Chiropractic Approach to Healing?

Chiropractic philosophy recognizes that nervous system health is key to total body health. The nervous system is responsible for the regulation of vital functions like blood circulation, body movement, breathing, and digestion. The nervous system includes the brain and the spinal cord, which means that nearly all body functions can be traced back to the spine. When the spine has problems, proper communication between the brain and the spine can’t occur. This impacts the entire body eventually. The chiropractic care practitioner will make sure that the nervous system is properly balanced through spinal adjustments. Chiropractic care is an all-natural type of healing. There are never any potentially dangerous medications or invasive surgeries used in a chiropractic care plan.
